BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan, March 17 (PNA) — The local government unit (LGU) of Malay is continuing the capacity building training for lifeguards of the island.
Executive Assistant IV Rowen Aguirre, who serves as Boracay Island administrator, said the continued training of lifeguards is part of their preparations for the tourist peak season in April and May.
Aguirre said the training aims to enhance the response capacity of the island’s lifeguard in times of emergency.
From 17 last year, the LGU now has only nine lifeguards manning mostly the four-kilometer white sandy beaches of the island.
Aguirre assured the safety of tourists swimming at the beaches despite the fewer number of lifeguards.
He added that aside from the lifeguards, guards hired by the LGU are also trained as lifesavers.
Aguirre said the lifeguards are also mandated to apprehend violators of the island’s ordinances.
April and May are considered as Boracay’s peak season due to a number of summer activities, such as the long Labor Day weekend dubbed as “Laboracay” and international sports events, including the Boracay International Dragon Boat Festival and the Holy Week. (PNA)
