ILOILO CITY, June 26 (PNA) -– The regional offices of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) jointly launched an advocacy campaign on climate change mitigation and adaptation advocacy campaign in Western Visayas on Wednesday in this city as part of the national campaign on climate change.
Dr. Alicia L. Lustica, DENR regional technical director for research and PIA Regional Director Janet Mesa will lead the campaign to bring to the Ilonggos the mitigation and adaptation measures against the onslaughts of calamities such as super typhoons spawned by climate change and the degradation of the environment.
Starting with the local media practitioners in this city, the campaign will be brought to the provinces of Negros Occidental in Ngros island and in the provinces of Capiz, Aklan and Antique in Panay Island and Guimaras.
A known climate change expert, Lustica pointed out that climate change is 90 percent due to human activities and global warming is mainly due to the accumulation of green houses gases in the earth’s atmosphere.
“Climate change is here and we can not do anything about it. All we have to do is campaign about human activities that destroy the earth and push for mitigation and adaptation strategies to help prevent further destruction of human lives and properties,” Lustica said.
The Philippines is one of the five most vulnerable countries in the world to the effects of climate change, being located in the typhoon belt area. The country is visited by at least 20 typhoons a year. (PNA)
